How to Care for Your Bathrobe: The Ultimate Robe Care Guide
This page is for general bathrobe care. For Highway Robery robes we recommend hand washing and hang drying. Due to the nature of using deadstock fabrics and making robes in limited quantities, we are not able to test wash all of the robes that we sell. That's why we really do suggest hand washing + hang drying. That being said, we know that can be kind of a pain. Since our robes are generally made for lounging, you really don't need to wash them very often.
1. How to Wash Your Bathrobe
Check the label. Always start by reading the care tag. Most robes will have care instructions right on the robe.
Machine wash with care.
Use cold water. Hot water can cause shrinkage and fade colors.
Use a mild, non-bleach detergent. Harsh chemicals can break down fibers.
Avoid overloading the washer — robes need room to move.
Pro Tip: Wash your robe alone or with similar fabrics to avoid lint transfer.
2. Drying Do’s and Don’ts
Tumble dry low.
Drying your robe on low heat helps maintain softness and avoid damage. High heat can lead to shrinkage or crispy textures.
Air-dry if you can.
Especially for upcycled or artisan-made robes, (like a Highway Robery robe!) air-drying on a hanger can preserve their shape reduce wear, and help avoid shrinkage.
3. How Often Should You Wash a Robe?
Depends on how you wear it.
Post-shower use: Every 3–4 wears
Lounging only: Every 15-20 wears, unless you've spilled something on it and/or it is generally feeling gross.
Gym/spa use: After each use
4. Robe Maintenance Tips
Avoid fabric softener. It can leave a coating that reduces absorbency.
Spot clean minor spills. Dab with cold water and a small amount of detergent.
Store it dry. Never hang a damp robe in a closet — it can trap moisture and cause mildew.
Fluff it up. Toss it in the dryer for 5 minutes with dryer balls to restore softness.
5. Special Care for Upcycled or Handmade Robes
Got a robe from Highway Robery made from repurposed fabrics? Treat it like the treasure it is. Hand wash, hang dry.
